The Ukrainian Media and Communication Institute has conducted a study of the needs of older adults (60+) in the media literacy sphere.
This study has been carried out during 2023 year in partnership with Deutsche Welle Akademie with the financial support of the German Federal Ministry for Economic Cooperation and Development (BMZ)
The study included:
- the public opinion poll (was conducted by the Kyiv International Institute of Sociology within a period from 11 May to 04 July 2023; 1186 respondents aged 60 and older, residing in all regions of Ukraine);
- focus group discussions (8 focus groups were conducted in 8 Ukrainian regions);
- the online survey and in-depth interviews with media literacy experts and organizations that work with an audience of 60+ in the field of media literacy), representatives of donors and government organizations.
The older age group is slightly more than a quarter of Ukraine’s population: in early 2023, the State Statistics Committee recorded 10.68 million retired people. This age group is still the most active when it comes to voting and can have a substantial impact on society and politics.
“Despite such a significant number, this age group is significantly limited in its informational rights, and we observe information inequality between different age groups in the country. Older people often do not receive this or that information because they use the Internet and modern gadgets less. Therefore, we are grateful to our partners from the Deutsche Welle Akademie that we can pay more attention to older people,” says Diana Dutsyk, the executive director of the Ukrainian Media and Communication Institute. “This study allows us to develop several educational media and information literacy models for older people more thoroughly,” she adds.
